Vortrag “The Cryptolect of the Merchants on the Silk Road, Using the Example of the Georgian Jews”

Goethe-Universität, Campus Westend, House of Finance, Frankfurt am Main
von 16:30 Uhr bis 17:00 Uhr
Vortragende: Dr. Zakharia Pourtskhvanidze, Dr. Nanuli Tskhvediani
Beschreibung: The Silk Road allowed the creation of various professions that guaranteed the functioning of the trade routes. Since communication had to take place across language borders, there were closed language codes that could only be used and understood by representatives of certain professions. Georgia, as one of the countries on the northern route of the Silk Road, has a long tradition of trade. This tradition gave rise to a guild of merchants dominated by Georgian Jews. It was a professional network with a secret language for communication. This secret language was based on the Georgian language. It seems that at present a long tradition of hidden communication between traders has been preserved. Some examples from a total of seventy contexts will be presented in the lecture. In addition, the linguistic structures and social functions of this cryptolect will be discussed.

Im Rahmen des Workshops “Sprachen, Kulturen und Güter entlang der Seidenstraße“
Organisatoren: Dr. Zakharia Pourtskhvanidze, Dr. Susanne Fehlings
